Plein Air in March

A little painting on location today at St. Francois State Park in Missouri!

Blocking in some basic colors before heading back to the studio. It’s getting a bit chilly on this sunny, but cool March day. I’ll finish this at home.

Miniature Painting – Thomas Lake

Painted this 2 x 3 inch oil painting on January 5, 2019. It was 65°F which is definitely not the norm for January in Missouri. As of today, winter has returned with a couple of snowstorms and bitter cold temps firmly in place.

This scene is located at Engler Park in Farmington, Missouri. I’ll be going back to this location to paint again when the weather gets warm.

Two in Two

Here are a couple of miniature oil paintings from last week. Two paintings in two days!

The first one was painted using my Altoids tin pochade box. I had a doctor’s appointment, and had to have blood drawn a couple of hours before my appointment. I decided not to sit in the waiting room for 2 hours, so I went to a local park and painted.

The second one was painted the next day while I was out getting grapes for grape jelly from a local grower near St. James, Missouri. The old depot was fixed up a few years ago and sits along the BNSF tracks that run through the town. It was a pleasant day!

Hull Elevator

I was able to get in some oil painting practice using my homemade pochade box on location on June 10, 2017.

I found a great spot in the shade and painted this scene of some grain elevators in Hull, Illinois. I’m not real thrilled with the finished oil sketch, but it was good practice. I recently modified my homemade cigar box pochade with a T-nut so I could mount it to a camera tripod. My first attempt at this modification failed, but I was able to rework it. The new fitting worked like a charm.

A nearby resident stopped by to see what I was doing. I had a nice conversation with him, and he even brought me a cold Pepsi to drink. Rural America at its best!

All-in-all, an enjoyable day of painting and watching trains pass by!

Barn on Chestnut Ridge Road

Barn on Chestnut Ridge Road (12 x 16 inches; watercolor)
Painted this watercolor earlier today. The weather was absolutely beautiful! This scene is located in a field behind the house where I live.

Here are a few progress photos of the painting process…
